Still on Microsoft Windows XP? Time is running out

Key questions all businesses should think about as part of their migration planning

Mississauga, ON – April 8, 2013 – While Windows XP is no longer the most used operating system on the planet – Windows 7 surpassed it last year – the upcoming April 2014 deadline to receive support for older Windows XP devices raises the question for many businesses of what to do with their older technology as they look to protect valuable IP and customer information.

Business and personal technology has dramatically changed over the last decade. Traditional desktop and laptop PCs are being joined by newer form factors like Ultrabooks, all-in-ones, and tablets. Writeable CDs are increasingly being replaced by cloud-based storage solutions like SkyDrive. Connectivity and accessibility once limited to offices is now possible at home, in the car or even on a beach. Windows 8, released this fall, reflects this evolution.

As businesses evaluate their migration path from Windows XP, there are a few key questions to consider:

· What does support look like for the software applications you need for work? As Windows XP heads off into the sunset, many of the applications that were originally written for it will cost extra in support costs – especially as independent software vendors increasingly stop supporting their newer apps running on Windows XP. This is one of the reasons why firms like IDC predict the longer businesses wait to move to Windows XP to Windows 7 or Windows 8, the pricier custom support for Windows XP gets.

· What kinds of form factors do your employees need to be successful? With an ever-increasing lineup of Windows 8 form factors to choose from – from notebooks, tablets and all-in-ones that use touch – you can replace older hardware with a newer Windows device that reflect the unique needs of your employees and how they prefer to work today.

· How do you want to manage devices running on your corporate network? Businesses in particular are feeling the most pressure to stay up-to-date, with an increasing need to protect their data and manage all their devices, all while ensuring security and compliance.

Companies such as BT PLC, Emirates Airlines, Seton Hall University and Toyota Racing Development moved from XP to Windows 7 and are now deploying Windows 8 because of how it reflects their needs today.

Microsoft Grows Surface Family

REDMOND, Wash. — Jan. 22, 2013 — Microsoft Corp. today announced that its Surface family of PCs is growing. Its newest model — Surface Windows 8 Pro — will be available for purchase on Feb. 9, 2013, in the United States and Canada at all Microsoft retail stores, microsoftstore.com, Staples and Best Buy in the U.S., as well as from a number of locations in Canada.

Powered by an Intel Core i5 processor, Surface Windows 8 Pro provides the power and performance of a laptop in a tablet package. Perfect as your one device — at home, in the office, or on the road — it can run Windows 8 applications, as well as current Windows 7 desktop applications. Starting at an estimated retail price of C$919, Surface Windows 8 Pro will be available in 64GB and 128GB models.¹ A Surface pen with Palm Block technology, designed specifically to work with Surface to let customers edit, collaborate and get things done, is included with Surface Windows 8 Pro.

In addition to being able to buy Surface Windows 8 Pro in the coming weeks, customers will soon be able to purchase Surface Windows RT in 13 additional markets worldwide,² more than doubling the number of markets in which Surface is currently available.

· Customers will have the option of purchasing a Wedge Touch Mouse, Surface Edition, for an estimated retail price of C$69.95 in all markets in which Surface is currently sold³ with additional markets to follow in the coming weeks.

Microsoft Launches Windows 8 in Canada

New offers, apps and range of hardware options offers choice and opportunity for customers as Windows 8 becomes globally available.

MISSISSAUGA, Ont. – October 25, 2012 – Today, Microsoft announced the availability of Windows 8 for its customers in Canada and around the world. Beginning on Friday, October 26, consumers and businesses worldwide will be able to experience all that Windows 8 has to offer: a beautiful new UI, a wide range of apps with the grand opening of the Windows Store, available on more than 1000 Windows 8 certified PCs and tablets. Windows 8 will be available for download to upgrade existing PCs in over 140 markets and 37 languages at http://windows.microsoft.com/en-CA/windows/home and at retail locations around the world including the Microsoft Holiday Retail Stores at Toronto’s Eaton Centre, Edmonton Mall, Metropolis shopping mall in Burnaby and the Oakridge Centre in Vancouver. Windows 8 devices will be available at local retail stores across Canada, including Best Buy, Future Shop and Staples. Starting November 16, consumers can also purchase Windows 8 at the first Canadian Microsoft Retail Store at Yorkdale Mall.

Upper Canada District School Board Invests in Students’ Future Through Historic Education Alliance Agreement with Microsoft Canada

The first-ever Canadian Education Alliance Agreement will help UCDSB students achieve their full potential and prepare them for success in the workforce

February 9, 2012 – The Upper Canada District School Board (UCSDB) and Microsoft Canada are pleased to announce the formation of an Education Alliance Agreement that will transform the education experience in the region and help to strengthen the local economy. This agreement is the first of its kind in Canada and will provide the UCDSB’s 30,000 students and 2449 teachers with access to leading-edge technology that will empower educators, enrich instruction, and help prepare students and communities join the 21^st century workforce.

As part of the agreement, Microsoft Canada has committed to providing the UCDSB with a variety of software and educational resources. UCDSB schools will have access to the latest Microsoft software available in labs, classrooms, and on student PCs. The Imagine Cup Canada 2012 registration now open

TORONTO, February 6, 2012– Microsoft Canada is challenging Canadian high school and post-secondary students to imagine a world where technology helps solve the toughest problems during the Imagine Cup Canada 2012. Registration is now open for this global competition which requires students to creatively use technology to solve real-world problems.

Students can register for Imagine Cup Canada 2012 at www.microsoft.ca/imaginecup to compete in one of two Canadian platform categories: Windows Phone 7 Game Design, registration closes February 14; and Software Design, registration closes March 13. Microsoft will fly the top three teams from each category to Toronto for the Canadian Finals. The winning Software Design team in Canada and the top 10 international finalists in the Game Design category will then be flown to compete in the Worldwide Finals in Sydney, Australia this July.

“The Imagine Cup is a global competition that empowers and inspires passion and idealism in students and encourages them to apply classroom learning to solve real-world problems,” said Gladstone Grant, Vice President, Developer & Platform Group, Microsoft Canada Inc. “Microsoft is proud to support our Canadian students through this annual competition which cultivates a spirit of social and technological entrepreneurialism.”

By participating in the Imagine Cup 2012, students have the chance to learn new technological skills and win cash, grants and prizes. Last year, more than 350,000 students representing 183 countries and regions entered the competition.

Top Priority For Students This Fall: Staying Socially Connected

More important than academic success, Microsoft survey shows 94% of students want to stay connected with friends and family as they head back to school

MISSISSAUGA, Ont. — As students tackle the transition between grade school to high school, or high school to university, their top priority is to stay connected to their social sphere. A new study revealed today just how important it is to university students that they stay connected as they head off for a new school year.

The study, commissioned by Microsoft Canada, surveyed Canadian students 18 and older to ask them about their attitudes and concerns as they approach the 2011 back-to-school season.

It revealed that 94 per cent of students say it is important to them to keep in touch with friends and family during the school year. This type of social connectivity ranked higher amongst students than their concern about educational success (90%), budgeting and financing for the school year (92%), safety (51%) and making new friends (57%).

The findings are in keeping with the profile of this generation, according to Dr. Karyn Gordon, a leading North American expert on family and relationships.

“For Gen Y, staying connected with friends is their highest value because it equals security and stability. With nearly 50% of families ending in divorce, many of this generation view their friends as their primary form of stability,” Dr. Gordon said. “In times of transition, such as moving from grade 8 to grade 9 and high school to university, being able to connect to their established base of friends helps students feel more secure, helping them better cope with new experiences.”

Technology takes social connections up a notch with PC-driven experiences such as face-to-face video chat, email, and photos or videos sharing. Familiar technology such as Windows and Windows Live services become empowering tools that allow people to stay connected and build the exceptional relationships students need to help feel secure.

“The same technology students use to get ahead in school can be instrumental in helping students maintain those important connections to friends and family,” said Ben Kaye, Product Manager at Microsoft Canada. “With Windows-based PC, Windows Live and even Windows Phone, students have access to an amazing number of ways to connect and share – whether it’s stories, photos, videos or even assignments – with their friends and family whenever or virtually wherever they are.”

With Windows plus Windows Live, students have the must-have technology for back-to-school success. Here are Microsoft’s top five tips for students this year:

1. Set up a Sunday night chat with Mom and Dad. While friends are an important source of security and support for students, you can’t neglect Mom and Dad. Sunday nights might not be the same, but you can check in on Mom and Dad using your Windows-based PC. Set up a weekly Sunday night video chat via Windows Live Messenger to establish a familiar routine that will help both parties adjust to the new school year.

2. Don’t miss a beat with your friends in different cities. Messenger offers great new ways to stay in touch, so students can connect with the people that matter to them the most – helping to bring a sense of security and stability to students who are experiencing change. Messenger makes is easy to chat or even just share a quick photo, allowing students to stay connected to their friends.

3. Stay in touch and organized with Windows Live Hotmail. Hotmail is designed to help students stay connected by offering features for an efficient and clutter-free inbox whether on a mobile phone or a PC. For example, 1-Click Filters allow users to filter the e-mails they are currently viewing to show only those that are unread, from contacts, or from social networks such as Facebook and LinkedIn so you can get to the important stuff fast. Helping students to be more organized can help to alleviate anxiety and stress.

4. Never lose a term paper again. Spilled coffee on your term paper? Left your laptop back at the dorm? Not a problem with Windows Live Sky Drive. For the 90 per cent that are worried about academic success, SkyDrive offers 25 GB of free storage space in the cloud, ensuring anytime, virtually anywhere access — from the dorm room, school library or friend’s house – to the files that matter most.

From August 8th to August 9th 2011 an online survey was conducted among 1,005 randomly selected Canadian adults, including 118 students and 187 parents of children enrolled in school who are Angus Reid Forum panelists. The margin of error for the full data set—which measures sampling variability—is +/- 3.1%, 19 times out of 20. The results have been statistically weighted according to the most current education, age, gender and region Census data to ensure a sample representative of the entire adult population of Canada. REDMOND, Wash. — 24 May 2011 — Microsoft today previewed the next major release of Windows Phone, code name “Mango,” through a series of media events around the world. “Mango” will deliver more than 500 new features to push the boundaries of the smartphone experience around communications, apps and the Internet. The Mango release will be available for free to Windows Phone 7 customers and is scheduled to ship on new phones beginning this fall; More details on device update timing will be provided closer to availability. Windows Phone will also add support for additional languages, expand access to apps by launching Marketplace in new countries, and partner with new OEMs to enable expansion to new markets.*

“Seven months ago we started our mission to make smartphones smarter and easier for people to do more,” said Andy Lees, President of the Mobile Communications Business at Microsoft. “With Mango, Windows Phone takes a major step forward in redefining how people communicate and use apps and the Internet, giving you better results with less effort.”

Communications: Easier to connect and share

The smartphone experience can be complicated by a sea of disconnected apps and accounts as people attempt to keep pace with all the ways they communicate – from calls, texts, email and IM to status updates, Tweets, check-ins, photo posting and tagging. To help people stay on top of that growing complexity, the Mango release organizes information around the person or group people want to interact with, not the app they have to use.

• Threads. Switch between text, Facebook chat, and Windows Live Messenger within the same conversation.

• Groups. Group contacts into personalized Live Tiles to see the latest status updates right from the start screen and quickly send a text, email or IM to the whole group.

• Deeper social network integration. Twitter and Linked In feeds are now integrated into contact cards, and Mango includes built-in Facebook check-ins and new face detection software that makes it easier to quickly tag photos and post to the Web.

• Linked Inbox. See multiple email accounts in one linked inbox. Conversations are organized to make it easy to stay on top of the latest mail.

A smarter approach to apps

Windows Phone will challenge the way people think about apps. Today their usefulness is measured by what can be done within the app, but we see the promise of apps in how they can be integrated directly into the core experiences of the phone. In addition to making it easier to get timely notifications and updates from apps right from the Start Screen, the Mango release will also surface apps as part of search results and within Windows Phone Hubs. As a result, a useful app is more likely to be right there when you need it.

• App Connect. By connecting apps to search results and deepening their integration with Windows Phone Hubs, including Video and Pictures, Mango allows apps to be surfaced when and where they make sense.

• Improved Live Tiles. Get real-time information from apps without having to open them. Live Tiles are more dynamic and can hold more information.

• Multitasking. Quickly switch between apps in use and allow apps to run in the background while helping to preserve battery life and performance.

Taking the Internet beyond the browser

In addition to including Internet Explorer, the Mango release will connect the power of the Web to the unique capabilities of your phone, such as location awareness, camera and access to apps, to present a new way of viewing the Web that is more localized, actionable and relevant.

• Internet Explorer 9. A browser based on the powerful IE9 and including support for HTLM5 and full hardware acceleration.

• Bing on Windows Phone. More ways to search the Web, so it’s easy to discover and decide.

• Quick Cards. When searching for a product, movie, event or place see a quick summary of relevant information, including related apps.

Strengthening the Ecosystem

The Windows Phone ecosystem has grown steadily since Windows Phone 7 first launched in October, with more than 17,000 apps currently available on Marketplace and Windows Phone handsets available from a range of partners worldwide, and Microsoft’s recently announced partnership with Nokia. Mango will further expand and strengthen the Windows Phone ecosystem through new partnerships with Acer Inc., Fujitsu Ltd. and ZTE Corp. which today announced plans to deliver new Windows Phone devices in markets around the world. Kinect for Xbox 360 brings controller-free entertainment to the UK from 10thNovember 2010

COLOGNE — August 17, 2010 - Xbox will transform entertainment at home and on-the-go this year with Kinect for Xbox 360 officially launching in the UK on 10th November, opening up a new world of controller-free games and Xbox LIVE entertainment. Xbox LIVE and a blockbuster line-up of games on Windows Phone 7 will also launch this Christmas, with Microsoft announcing a new line up of LIVE enabled titles coming to the PC.

Gamescom 2010 is the European premiere of Kinect for Xbox 360, introducing millions more people to the intuitive freedom of being controller-free. Kinect for Xbox 360 will have its European premiere at Gamescom 2010, where the show will unveil new games and experiences which demonstrate the depth and breadth of the launch line-up. Consumers can now purchase Office 2010 at retail stores across Canada, such as Future Shop, Best Buy, Staples; through online retailers, including Amazon.ca; and direct from Microsoft at Office.com/ca.

Microsoft reveals new ways to play that are fun and easy for everyone.

LOS ANGELES - June 14, 2010 - Get ready to Kinect to fun entertainment for everyone. Microsoft Corp. today capped off a two-day world premiere, complete with celebrities, stunning physical dexterity, and news from a galaxy far, far away, to reveal experiences that will transform living rooms in North America, beginning Nov. 4. Kinect will roll out to the rest of the world thereafter.

Opening with a magical Cirque du Soleil performance on Sunday night attended by Hollywood's freshest faces, Microsoft gave the transformation of home entertainment a name: Kinect for Xbox 360. Then, kicking off the Electronic Entertainment Expo (E3), today Xbox 360 invited the world to dance, hurdle, soar and make furry friends for life - all through the magic of Kinect - no controller required.

"With 'Kinectimals' and 'Kinect Sports,' 'Your Shape: Fitness Evolved' and 'Dance Central,' your living room will become a zoo, a stadium, a fitness room or a dance club. You will be in the centre of your entertainment, using the best controller ever made - you," said Kudo Tsunoda, creative director for Microsoft Game Studios.

Microsoft and LucasArts also announced that they will bring Star Wars® to Kinect in 2011. And, sprinkling a little fairy dust on Xbox 360, Disney will bring its magic to Kinect as well.

"Xbox LIVE is about making it simple to find the entertainment you want, with the friends you care about, wherever you are. Kinect is about making that experience more natural and engaging than ever before," said Marc Whitten, corporate vice president of Xbox LIVE at Microsoft. Just like real pets, your "Kinectimals" will come running when they hear your voice, respond to commands like "jump," "roll-over" and "play dead," and purr with joy when you scratch them behind the ears.

--"Kinect Joy Ride" (Big Park, Microsoft Game Studios). 3 ... 2 ... 1 ... Go! "Kinect Joy Ride," the first controller-free racing game, will take you and your friends on the ride of your lives - no drivers license required. "Kinect Joy Ride" reinvents driving and Kart racing by adding massive jumps and full body stunts to the classic Kart racing action. The new Hotmail: the next generation in personal email

REDMOND, Wash. - May 17, 2010 - Microsoft Corp. today previewed the new Windows Live^TM Hotmail® - the next generation of personal email - designed with smart tools that help people manage the clutter in their inboxes, save time on the most common tasks they do with email, take the headache out of sharing large attachments like photos, and view and edit Microsoft Office documents right in the Hotmail inbox using just a browser.

Today's inboxes are overflowing with mail that most people consider junk. Even if it is mail that's legitimate, it's still not easy for customers to keep their inbox clean and organized. To help, the new Hotmail delivers the first and only virtual broom, enabling customers to easily sweep unwanted mail out of the inbox. It also helps cut through clutter with intelligent filters that in a single click will filter the entire inbox to show mail just from contacts, just social network alerts, or just mail from the groups users belong to.

With the new Hotmail, customers will also find ways to save time doing the things they most often do with email because Hotmail is giving people the ability to do things that would normally require them to leave their inboxes and jump to other websites. Now customers will be able to see rich previews of photos and videos from popular sites like Flickr and YouTube and see the status of tracked packages in real time, inside their emails. They'll also be able to accept invitations to connect with someone on a social or professional networking site like LinkedIn - all from the convenience of their inboxes.

"With over 360 million active Hotmail accounts worldwide, Microsoft has spent a lot of time listening to customer feedback and thoughtfully designing solutions to meet their needs," stated Owen Sagness, Vice President, Consumer and Online, Microsoft Canada Inc. "Whether it's organizing events, managing commercial transactions, searching for jobs, sharing photos, or communicating with friends and family, the new Hotmail will help increase personal productivity."

One of the biggest changes to Hotmail is the increased ability to manage and share personal photos and documents. Today, people are sharing over 1.5 billion photos and 350 million Microsoft Office documents per month in Hotmail. Still, the "attachment size problem" remains, regardless of which mail service people use. The new Hotmail lets customers send up 10 GB of attachments in a single message, erasing worries of attachment size limits. Send up to 200 attachments - each up to 50 MB in size - in a single message.

With the new version of Hotmail customers are able to view and edit Office documents right in inbox, and all you need is your browser to do so.

"By making it possible for you to create and edit Office documents right in your inbox, Hotmail makes it easier for you to be productive from virtually anywhere," says Sagness.

New features previewed today include those that help you quickly find important messages and manage the clutter in your inbox so that you can stay organized.

Hotmail highlights: Immediately see if you have new email from friends, social network updates, shipments, appointments and birthday reminders - all in a single glance the moment you log in.
Sweep. With this virtual broom you can quickly 'sweep' all unwanted mail out of your inbox and into folders or the trash. You can tell Hotmail to perform sweeps automatically with the simple check of a box. And you can sweep mail from your Gmail and Yahoo! Mail accounts by adding them to your Hotmail inbox, where you can send and receive mail from other email services.
One click filters. In just a single click you can filter your entire inbox to show you the mail you care about most, whether it's all messages from your contacts or from social networks like Facebook and LinkedIn or mailing groups you belong to. You can also click once to find all messages that contain photos, documents, videos, shipping updates or messages you've flagged.
Advanced search and automated search suggestions. Not only has Hotmail added an advanced search pane, but we've also made advanced search easy with inbox search auto-complete. From the moment you type a single letter into the search box, Hotmail automatically suggests a number of searches so that you can more quickly find the messages you're looking for.
Conversation view. Group your emails by conversation or don't - it's completely up to you. A single click turns conversation view on or off.

Microsoft also showed off work they've done together with a collection of top websites to enable people to do more without having to continually leave their inboxes.

Active views: A lot of messages prompt you to leave your inbox and hop to other websites to complete actions. Hotmail is saving you time by enabling you to complete those actions right within the messages themselves, whether it's viewing videos from YouTube or photos on Flickr, tracking the shipping status of packages in real time, or interacting with services like LinkedIn - all from the convenience of your inbox.

Given that security and privacy protection is at the forefront of everything that Microsoft does, the new Hotmail will provide a number of additional measures to help people keep their accounts safe.

Industry leading spam-fighting. By utilizing Microsoft's SmartScreen spam and malware cloud-based filtering heuristics - technology also used by Microsoft Exchange Server, Forefront^TM, and Internet Explorer to help protect against spam and malicious code - Hotmail has been able to reduce the amount of spam in the average inbox from what was a "low" of 35% of the average Hotmail inbox back in 2006 to just 4% today - a best practice for personal webmail. Hotmail continues to leverage Microsoft's $9.5 Billion R&D investment to innovate new ways to minimize spam and to outpace the bad guys. Some of innovations that the new Hotmail brings with it include time traveling filters, personalized spam filtering, spam tagging, and spammer infrastructure detection.
Trusted senders. With the new Hotmail, we help you to visually identify trusted senders in your inbox, particularly banks and other senders most commonly impersonated in phishing scams, by putting safety logos next to those senders who we recognize as legitimate.
Full-session SSL. In addition to providing SSL encryption of credentials at login for all accounts, the new Hotmail will soon support the option to maintain SSL encryption between you and Microsoft servers during your entire Hotmail session.
Single-use codes. This new security feature is designed to further help protect you by giving you the option to ask Hotmail to SMS to you a one-time temporary password if you'd prefer not to use your regular password when logging into Hotmail on public computers that could potentially harbor key logging malware that could steal your password, such as those sometimes found in internet cafes and airports.

Additional feature investments in the new Hotmail include the following.

Rich mobile browse. With the new Hotmail, the mobile experience is optimized for rich browsers and touch, so that the user experience feels seamless on the latest phones. The inbox supports filters, in-line message previews, HTML messages, offline e-mail viewing, conversation threading, the ability to flag messages, the option to turn header details on or off, and more.
Mobile Calendar. Manage invitations received via Hotmail, set reminders, aggregate multiple calendars, share your calendar with friends and family, and do it all from the calendar built into your phone with ActiveSync or from your phone's web browser.
Exchange ActiveSync. Hotmail supports push email on the Web, PC, and now also on the mobile phone. Using Exchange ActiveSync, available on nearly 300 million phones, you can not only seamlessly synchronize Hotmail between your phone and the Web, but also synchronize your calendar and contacts
Single contact list.
